Action Cartoons

Posted by Cubesona - 13 days ago

What are some of your favorite action cartoons from the 2000s and earlier? As early as, like, the late 70s, even. Would definitely like to see examples both popular and obscure! especially shows that never made it to the US, or at least never got big here.

I want some material to study for a potential direction I'd like to take my art style and it would be convenient to have a single place to reference sources suggested by my audience.

Popular: Batman Animated Series, He-Man
Obscure (to most people, let's be real): Gargoyles, Darkstalkers, Spawn

@LuvTonique This might be a regional thing, but there was nobody in my circle of friends who didn't watch "the Gargoyles" at the time (although not a lot of people ever saw Season 3 - because it is dog*****). ;)

You did not specify if movie or series, so for diversity, I'm concentrating on movies (in order of how popular with people I know&knew they were - because the internet wasn't much of a thing back then):
The Secret of NIMH (1982) [not strong on the 'action', but it's the one that _immediately_ comes to mind when thinking of that era]
Titan A.E. (2000)
Mulan (1998)
Anastasia (1997)

2 'Series' that also came to mind were:
The Tick (1994-1996) [very popular]
Jem (1985-1988) [so obscure 'even I' haven't watched it]

Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10, xiaolin showdown, el tigre, chaotic, Martin mystery, mega xlr, avatar, oban star racers, super robot monkey team hyperforce go, samurai jack, Jackie chan adventures, the spectacular spiderman, class of the titans, swat Kats.

@Yatsufusa When I was growin' up, nobody was watchin it except me and my brother. Though we grew up in SoCal, everyone down there was just watching Rated R movies and you were "gay" if you watched cartoons that weren't anime. So yeah, probly a regional thing!

I wasn't supposed to be watching HBO's Spawn but my dad was paying for it and I had my own TV in my room but I inhaled pretty much everything... Just naming what I remember off the top of my head. Megas XLR, Samurai Jack, Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Spider-Man TAS, X-men, Gargoyles, Swat Katz, Jackie Chan Adventures, Roughnecks (a CGI Starship Troopers show), Exo Squad, Cyber Six... I could really keep going but I don't wanna clog things up.

The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest.
Men in Black The Animated Series.
Godzilla The Animated Series.
Cyber Six.
Swat Kats.
Tron Uprising.
Motorcity.
He-Man 2002 Reboot.
Thundercats 2011 Reboot.
Batman Beyond.
Generator Rex.
Extreme Dinosaurs.
Exo-Force.

This one is going to cross over a lot of minds but… Heavy Metal. Is definitely a must watch film. I collab with this one guy for the storytime collab called MetalSlayer, and he had a Heavy Metal Character as his profile pic on discord, I wanted to say something to him at the time about it since it’s one of my favorite films. But I forgot the name of the movie.

Thundercats and the Hobbit, Gargoyles, Spawn, Biker Mice from Mars, Akira, Samurai Jack, and G1 Transformers are the ones that come to mind.
